‘Turn’ was the first song that I began working on with the main purpose of creating an album around the theme of the changing of the seasons. I love the crispness in the air that autumn brings, whilst the changing colours and falling of leaves creates an evocativeness that is particularly unique to this time of year.
This change to autumn is represented through a combination of a couple of simple, unhurried melodies which weave in and out of a variety of repetitions, rhythmical shifts and register on the piano. The main theme features a repetitive musical ornament (an embellishment to the melody) literally called a turn, which allows the focus of the song to come through and create a sense of change and development, whilst remaining familiar, in the same way that we become accustomed to the changing of the seasons.
