After Garreth Broke's video premiere I will shine a light in this blog article on two very special new releases. The first one is the debut album of the enigmatic ambient artist "Unsichtbar", who draw earlier this year with the two compositions "Willkommen im Paradies" and "Träume" some attention.
"Ballades" is the second new release and also the first work for Doug Thomas with the recently founded label "Piano and Coffee Records". One week with two exciting releases! So let's start this article with "Ballades".
Doug Thomas - "Ballades"
After "Short Stories Vol. 1&2, Angles, and Cassiopeia released the French composer Doug Thomas together with my friends of "Piano and Coffee Records" his EP "Ballades" this week and reflected on this four new compositions the beauty of a walk in Paris. Between 2015 and 2017 composed Doug all of those piano pieces in his studio and approached Sergio Diaz De Rojas, the founder of "Piano & Coffee", with the idea to release those impromptus as a collaborative EP.
Together with the highly talented musicians Marta Cascales, Manos Milonakis, Marek Votruba and Muriël Bostdorp brought the P&C team this idea in the last months to life. All of the artists performed one of Doug's compositions for this project and interpreted it on their own, unique way...
"Music allows me to express ideas and feelings in a unique way. Each piece I compose is an attempt in finding balance between interest and beauty, within the limits of my own language and experience" - Doug Thomas.
...like Muriel Bostdorp from Amsterdam, who interpreted the fourth piece on this recording "Matryoshka-Toska". It is an impressionistic piano impromptu, which evolves its emotions with a dynamic and memorable minimalistic melody in the style of composers like Erik Satie or Claude Debussy. Those two composers were also the main inspiration for the other three pieces on this EP like the aerial "Ballades I" (interpreted by Marta Cascales) and "Ballades II" (interpreted by Marek Votruba). Within those pieces worked with floating and expeditiously piano motives and varied them to create a wonderful timbre and atmospheric sound. "4x3", which was performed by the Greek composer Manos Milonakis, was composed around little sequences that framed the whole idea of the EP seamlessly.
The lovely artwork and the CD design were made by Jolien van der Beek and Rita Silva, who have already worked on several "Piano and Coffee" projects like a music video for Ceeys. So if you want to listen to the whole EP, just go to Spotify. On Bandcamp, you can also buy a vinyl-effect CD. Enjoy!
Unsichtbar - "Erlebnis"
Earlier this year entered an enigmatic new artist into the world of ambient music and released with "Willkommen im Paradies" and "Träume" two beauteous compositions. This certain musician is known under is alter ego "Unsichtbar" (in English: "invisible") and hide his identity like the Berlin-based composer Lambert to "make music without thinking too much [and] with the [...] intention of experimenting".
With his album, "Erlebnis" (in English: "experience") celebrates the mysterious composer his debuts and present the world ten compositions with two collaborations with Sergio Díaz De Rojas and Lee Yi. This noisy ambient experience is for Unsichtbar in the end "just textures and sensations" with "no hidden messages, no complicated concepts, nothing at all." But in particularly those "sensations" and astonishments make the debut album of this artist so interesting.
Here, I experiment with completely different and new sounds with the only intention of experimenting. No hidden messages, no complicated concepts, nothing at all. Just textures and sensations." - Unsichtbar
Unsichtbar created on "Erlebnis" noisy ambient tapestries of sounds full of dense, thick and blurred synth layers that are floating and varying like clouds. Sharp, metallic and high-pitched noises open this "tapestries" and shining through this vague soundscape like sunlight. In the distance appears on sweeping ballads like "Mensch" (together with Sergio Diaz De Rojas) or "Junges Liebespaar" a calm, fragile piano melody. A spherical melody full of tenderness and evanescence in an ambient sound world that reminded me sometimes of neo-noir science fiction films like "Blade Runner".
The beautiful minimalistic artwork for "Erlebnis" was made by Lore Deuninck and Gertjan Decock and via the London-based label ACR, you can enjoy it also at home on cassette. Furthermore, it is also available on Bandcamp and Spotify. So enjoy!
